We have tried to make all articles available in both Japanese and English.
motive
The reason why I suddenly decided to support English was that I was watching a Twitch stream by a painter, and when I saw the subtitles being translated almost in real time, with all the listeners being foreigners, even though the stream was in Japanese, I first wondered how they were able to achieve this.
After a little research, I found a way to realize this and it was achieved by combining several Web-APIs.
I had always wanted to get to know people from English-speaking countries, which encouraged me to try this blog while there were only a few articles, and I set out with the light-hearted idea that it would be interesting to make foreign acquaintances.
implementation method
We wanted to save as much time and effort as possible and decided to use a WordPress plugin as the easiest way to achieve this.
The plugin we used is called Bogo.
I understood that the plugin duplicates the pre-created Japanese articles and places the pages in other languages in a nice way.
The links and menus in the blog will be translated accordingly, but the articles themselves will need to be translated and re-posted on their own.
The direction of the translation was to use the free version of DeepL to handle the translation somehow.
The response itself was relatively easy.
Difficulties
It took time to genuinely translate each article.
I am not fluent in English, so I had to leave the translation to DeepL, but I was left to my own devices, and I had to deal with the fact that I easily exceeded the character count for the free translation, partly because of the relatively large number of words in this blog, which is mainly illustrations, and partly because I had to somehow correct some nuances in the translation that I had intended when I changed it from Japanese to English to Japanese and back. I was not sure if the final article was really translated well or not, but I completed the work.
The WordPress theme we use, Cocoon, is not particularly Bogo-compatible, so we had to spend a good amount of time customizing it to fill this gap between features.
There are still some issues that remain unresolved, but we are working on them for now and will resolve them when the time comes.
Summary. Somewhat cool.
It looks strangely cool to see my articles being translated into English.
It is a mysterious longing for English that is peculiar to the Japanese, but it is still very satisfying.
This blog itself is not attracting many visitors, so creating a page for foreign visitors will not make any difference, but I would like to update both sides of the page in case I make foreign friends in the future, or in case it would be interesting for me to make foreign friends through this opportunity.
With illustrations, there is a possibility that people will pay attention even if there is a language barrier!
